Our History

From the construction of the first St Matthias church building back in 1885 right through to the present church building and the congregations that meet within its walls, St Matthias has had an extensive and colourful history!

In 2008, Caitlin Hurley (at that time a St Matthias church partner who would go on to become one of our ministry trainees) authored an
edited sketch of the history of St Matthias.
 
On the busy corner of Oxford Street and Moore Park Road in Paddington, Sydney there stands a church. To a local partaking in some window shopping on Oxford Street on a busy Sunday morning this building is just another sandstone church. A church that harks back to a by gone era when people wore their Sunday best to a church service every Sunday. To the parishioners who still attend services in this building every Sunday it is just the infrastructure that houses a church of people. Little does the shopper or the parishioner know the important role this building and the people who flowed in and out of its walls played in the significant developments and events that shaped the early history of Sydney and by extension the history of Australia…
